Book Proposals

If you are interested in securing a traditional publisher, you need to send agents or publishers a query letter and then, if they are interested, a book a proposal. It's often a good idea to write your table of contents, chapter summaries and sample chapters, but wait until you get interest in the proposal before writing the whole book, since your publisher may want to make changes to the concept.

My colleagues and I have helped many clients get their books published and we'd love to help you. If you have no time to write your proposal, or would just rather have someone else write it, we can do that for you. If you want to reign in your budget, you can write your proposal and have us provide feedback. Some clients write part of the proposal but have me or my colleagues write other parts of it.

If you're writing all or part of your proposal, I highly recommend using Michael Larsen's How to Write a Book Proposal to all my clients. Feel free to e-mail or call to see what plan works best for you.

"In writing Battle over Baba Gurgur, Memoirs of an Iraqi American Physician, I discovered that writing a book is not as difficult and complicated as writing a book proposal. Publishers are tough and demanding, and a good book proposal is essential in presenting your book in the best possible light. I was lucky to find Lisa, who provided me with a clear sense of what goes into writing a book proposal. I was profoundly impressed by her expertise in this field, and her unreserved dedication to her client. Working with her was an education and a joy. I recommend her to you without any reservation."

"Her soft nudges and inspirational energy make me feel nurtured yet expertly guided. Lisa helped me find my voice and enjoy writing, even though I am a novice.

"Even with little free time on my part, Lisa has helped me to breathe life into the writing and it now has a life of it's own. I have achieved more with Lisa in two months than in 5 years of attempting to do this myself.

"Lisa truly knows how to get published. She helped me honor the dream and hold no regrets for things left undone in this lifetime."

"Preparing the proposal for my first book was a very intimidating process. Obviously, I wanted to maximize my chances of finding an agent and a publisher. I bought and read all of the books on creating a proposal. I knew I also wanted the hands on help of an expert.

"Lisa Tener referred me to her colleague, Martha Murphy, who is a Godsend. She has successfully published her own books, while helping a number of authors working in a variety of genres to do the same thing. I find her to be extremely thorough. Her criticism is gentle and spot on. She raised critical issues that encouraged me to dig deeper, ensuring that my proposal answers all the questions agents and publishers might have. She provided the essential accountability that supported me in getting the job done without succumbing to the inevitable procrastination that plagues many writers. Martha also patiently worked with me on several drafts of my query letter to make sure I had the strongest possible package.

"My query to one of my top choice agents resulted in a request for the full proposal. I am confident that, largely due to Martha's help, I will very soon have representation for my book.

"I highly recommend Martha Murphy to any writer on the challenging road to publication. You will find her generous support truly invaluable."
